California: Facebook has created its own ‘Supreme Court’. Facebook on Wednesday announced the creation of an ‘oversight board’. Which will act like a ‘Supreme Court’. This board will take decisions on the basis of ‘freedom of expression’ and human rights.
Its purpose will be to moderate the content policy on Instagram and Facebook and take decisions related to it. This can be said to improve the content and try to maintain a clean environment on social media.
The issue of spreading pornography in groups like ‘Bois Locker Room’ on Instagram is currently going on in India and at the same time, this board has also surfaced. Although Facebook had already planned it.
This over-sideboard will decide what kind of content can remain on Facebook and Instagram and what type of content needs to be removed. This board will take decisions on the basis of ‘freedom of expression’ and ‘human rights’.
Now, this oversight board will take care of disputes about posts, pages, profiles, groups, and even advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. 20 special people have been appointed for issues around the world.
The board will try to cover issues that affect a large number of people. The public will hear things related to the content visible in front of everyone and issues related to the user’s posts, pages, profiles, and groups.
The board can also reverse the decisions taken by Facebook and will conduct a final hearing on all matters. Both the user and Facebook can use the board’s cases, but which cases will be raised will depend on the discretion of the board.
It will have its own user-facing website, on which a complaint or dispute will be registered. Facebook has the power to send limited cases to the board and does not have the authority to ignore cases. The board will also have the option to seek help from outside experts to make decisions.
It will also take care of all the content related activities that come with it, whether it is Artificial Intelligence (AI), Algorithm, or Human Moderator. If there is any dispute with the decision in any of these, the matter will be referred to the Board.
The board will have a maximum of 90 days but it can also take fast decisions. The board will not be able to speak in any government policy. The over-sideboard of these 20 people includes 9 law professors, Yemen’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates, journalists, free speech advocates, and an author of the libertarian Cato Institute. Currently, it will start on Facebook and Instagram. But in the future, Facebook can extend it to other platforms such as WhatsApp and other services.
